Move the feet and body to get into line with the ball. If the ball is below chest height then take the ball with fingers pointing down.
If the ball is higher then twist the head and body and take the ball with hands horizontal.
Catching
In these areas your reactions will be tested to the maximum. Like batting or bowling, close catching is a skill you'll develop the more you practise.
Stand with your feet wider than shoulder width apart and with knees bent. The palms of the hands should be together, with fingers spread and pointing down.
Arms and hands should be in front of the body with the head still and the eyes level.
Watch the ball into the softest part of relaxed hands and wrap fingers around the ball, drawing the hands towards the body.
Throwing
Throwing the ball in quickly and accurately from the outfield is an important skill for every fielder to master.
It is a useful tool in preventing runs and getting batsmen run out.
So it's important to get the basics right.
Having collected the ball in both hands, stand sideways to the target. The throwing arm is taken back behind the head.
Pull the non-throwing arm through. Throwing arm swings forward keeping the elbow at least level with top of throwing shoulder.
The wrist should be outside the line of, and behind, the elbow.
Release the ball with both feet on the ground and the chest facing the target.
Swing the throwing arm through so that both arms end up behind the opposite hip. Keep the head and eyes facing the target.
